Our mission

Our mission is to nurture the intelligence and creativity of a child by teaching Mathematics subject. We strive hard to stimulate the whole intelligence of the child through improved speed and accuracy in calculation, concentration, visual memory and logical thinking. The concept is based on the use of Abacus – a tool which promotes the ability of a child to calculate large numerical calculations with ease whilst aiding the child’s mental development in the tender age.

Our vision

London Abacus Academy promotes collaboration between staff, parents, and students to achieve academic excellence. We foster the development of responsible, caring students - lifelong learners that are prepared to meet the challenges of the real world.

Teaching Technique

Our teaching method is by explanatory interaction not by note. Arithmetical methods are thoroughly instilled for understanding so that problems become easy to solve. Children discover that “to learn” means “to find out” and “to try”. It does not matter if at first they do not succeed - errors and mistakes are a necessary part of the learning process. By encouraging curiosity, students become interested in learning for themselves - something which is exciting and interesting rather than a “chore”. We make learning fun.

ABACUS?

The Abacus is a mathematical instrument which originated in China and later modernized by the Japanese. The Abacus has proven to be a successful tool not just for calculations, but also to enhance the concentration. This enhances the children's learning ability and enables them to do calculations mentally without the aid of any external tools like calculator, paper pen etc. Children are able to calculate with speed and accuracy using their own mental power. The use of this tool sharpens the child’s logical as well as creative thinking skills simultaneously. This leads to the whole brain development

The term ‘abacus’ allegedly derived from Greek origin – abax, abak – meaning ‘counting frame’ or ‘calculating board’, intended for working with large numbers and sums. Abaci methods were in use centuries before the modern, written numeral system and are still widely used by merchants, traders and clerks in continents such as Asia and Africa

There are different kinds of abacus around the world

Soroban is the name of Japanese abacus which has 1 beads on the higher deck and 4 beads on the lower deck. It is modified from the ancient Chinese abacus

The ancient Chinese abacus had 2 beads on the higher deck and 5 beads on the lower deck – this is referred to as the 2:5 system. By manipulating the beads, complex arithmetic calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and finding the square root could be carried out efficiently and accurately

Japan and Korea soon adopted the use of abaci and in the early 1930s, the Japanese modified the original model and presented the 1:4 abacus known as the ‘soroban’

What is Abacus
Abacus is a calculating device of ancient times. Today, it is designed using metal, wood, or plastic rectangular frame having 5 beads freely sliding over vertical rods. All the beads are divided by a fixed horizontal bar comprising 1 bead over vertical bar above the fixed horizontal bar and rest 4 are placed below the fixed horizontal bar. The beads placing over the fixed horizontal bar shows number 5. On the other hand, 4 rest beads represent number 1. Value is added to any bead moving towards the fixed horizontal bar. When it is removed from the fixed horizontal bar, it losses value. Through Abacus, you can easily do Arithmetic Operations including Addition, Subtraction, Division, Multiplication Square Roots, Cube Roots etc

Benefits Of Abacus Learning And Abacus Math Class
Abacus Math Class is structured method of learning and practicing the skills of operating Abacus to perform basic math or arithmetic operations like Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division etc. Kids need a guided envoirnment where the can take the instrcutions and practice the skills to perform mental arithmetic for mental math faster with accuracy and much more. Learning Abacus Math to perform Arithmetic Operations not only improves the ability to perform Mental Arithmetic for Mental Math, but also provides a beneficial ripple effect to their lives by Strengthening their Brain Functions.

"No Struggle With Numbers" - As the training progresses children deal with numbers and its operation as play way object in form bead sliding over a rod for operations like +, -, x, , %, , etc. making numbers and their operation in various math processes a playful and joyful activity for kids.

"I Love Maths" - Learning the methods of Abacus Math enables children to solve their questions faster with great accuracy, this brings them repeated success by regularly scoring high marks in the subject. This Success ripples into Interest for Math.

"Strengthend Visual Memory" - Performing Mental Arithmetic by the process of Imaging Abacus inside the mind stimulates Visual Memory, and its repeated usage improves it further allowing the brain to think, plan, vision, interpret thoughts spatially.

"Skilled To Concentration" - Operating Abacus and performing Arithmetic Process involves regular Solving by the way of Oral Math Question Solving Dictation and Solving by the way of Reading Dictated Math Question involves most of the sensory parts like Fingers, Hands, Eyes and Ears to co-ordinate with Mind for time to find a math result. This continuous practice of Time (plus) attention with increasing difficulty levels by way of more numbers per question and time target to solve set of questions is nothing but improved concentration.

"Cracking Success With A Creative Intelligence" - The most recongnised person is one who is most creative in its actions. Abacus Math action involves use image thinking, picture memory and spatial thinking for performing Mental Arithmetic, these functions of our brain are seated in the Right Brain and Right Brain is the seat for Creative Intelligence. Its continuous usage stimulates the right brain to deliver healthy and active work for from a Creative Mind.

Our Brain and LAA Arithmetic

Our brain is divided into two hemispheres (left and right), each of these halves controls one side of the body, and has specific functions.

The right hemisphere is responsible for coordinating the movement of the left side of our body, and it houses the spatial orientation perception, emotional behaviour (ability to express and capture emotions), ability to control the non-verbal communication , intuition, recognition and memory of faces, voices and melodies. The right brain thinks and remembers images.

For its part, the left hemisphere coordinates the right side of our body, and therein lies the verbal skills (speaking and understanding language), as well as analytical skills, ability to engage in logical reasoning, abstraction, problem solving numerical , learn theoretical information, make inferences.

LAA Mental Arithmetic by children exercise simultaneously in both hemispheres of the brain, promoting mental development of children.

This training is carried out by a proactive method between the teacher and the student in order to create an environment that "taps" the interest of the student in learning arithmetic.

How it works

Children become members and attend once a week for sessions lasting 2 hours.

At LAA, we ensure that children are stretched and challenged in exactly the right areas - whether they are finding school tricky or top of the class. Our teachers adapt to the unique strengths and weaknesses of the kids to bring out the best in them.

Our tutors work with children in a maximum ratio of 1:10, ensuring the right balance between individual support and independent learning. As children practice and acquire new skills, our tutors are always on hand to encourage, explain or teach a new concept.

Our tutors

Our tutors work with children in a low ratio (the maximum ratio is 1:10), ensuring the right balance between individual support and independent learning. As children practise and acquire new skills throughout the learning session, the tutors are always on hand to encourage, explain or suggest a new approach. They also make notes in order to provide parents with relevant feedback after every session.

The 2 hrs session

Energy booster (10-15 min) :

This fun-filled starter session prepares and activates the child’s brain tissues and is a unique workout regime that oxygenates the blood and other organs, leaving them full of energy and ready for the challenges of learning. We also call this session LOL, laugh out loud.

Maths made easy (90 min) :

The core of each program offered by the Academy which focuses on Abacus or the speed mathematics techniques, depending on the course to which the child has enrolled.

Challenge yourself (15 min) :

Hands on fun-filled activities from one of the following categories.

  1. Critical thinking

  2. Logical reasoning

  3. Science activities

  4. Open ended maths problems

  5. Share a skill

The children look forward to these individual/group activities as it often is the most enjoyable session after the hard work.

The reward

We provide a variety of short-term and long-term incentives to motivate children to give their best in every session. Children are also rewarded for their efforts when reaching set goals. When these goals are achieved, there are centre celebrations where children receive a certificate for their hard work and effort while receiving a huge round of applause from everyone.

Tracking progress and evaluations

At LAA we will monitor the progress of the child at regular intervals. The last week of a level is dedicated to examination and testing of the skills gained by the child.

We hold regular meetings with parents to discuss each child's progress and plan their learning pathway. Detailed reports help tutors and parents track the academic achievements of each child and set new learning goals.
